Your three main options
Most students arriving at JFK choose between an RU Life student carpool, a private Uber/Lyft, or public transportation. Each has a different tradeoff between cost, comfort, and timing.
If you're arriving with a lot of luggage or landing late at night, a carpool or private ride is usually the easier choice.
RU Life carpool
The most affordable option, typically $40–50 per seat. Carpools are organized by current Rutgers students and posted a few days before common move-in dates. You'll ride with 2–3 other students headed to the same campus.
Uber or Lyft
A private ride from JFK to New Brunswick costs roughly $110–150 depending on traffic and time of day, and takes about 75–90 minutes without traffic.
Public transportation
The cheapest option: take the AirTrain to Jamaica Station, then the LIRR or NJ Transit to New Brunswick. It takes 2.5–3 hours total and involves multiple transfers, so it's best if you're traveling light.
